API 653 Certified Tank Inspector


The position is for the supervision, direction, and performance of inspections and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) work of aboveground and underground petroleum, chemical, wastewater, and other storage tanks. Inspections and NDT are in accordance with API, STI, and other industry standards, as well as state and federal regulations.

The position would include potential advancement and/or promotions with commensurate compensation based on job performance and development of additional job responsibilities. This position requires the completion of a pre-employment drug screen and background check prior to employment. Benefits package to include 401k, health, life, and dental insurance.

Duties & Responsibilities

Performing, directing, or otherwise supervising Inspection and NDT activities in both indoors and outdoor, high and low noise, light and dark, at grade and at heights, and confined-space environments wearing and utilizing proper company supplied safety equipment, in accordance with applicable standards and regulations. Examples include API 653, STI SP001, 6 NYCRR Part 598 & 613, Suffolk County Article 12, or N.J.A.C. Title 7:1E.

Various physical activities to include lifting/carrying inspection equipment and materials, walking, standing, climbing, balancing, grasping, manipulating and/or assembling tools, and miscellaneous small tool use in various environments.

In addition to performing inspections, duties will involve review of inspection reporting for compliance and general integrity or adequacy and indication of repair methods at an PC within an office environment. Duties may also include providing technical support and communicating or coordination with customers or contractors.

General experience with inspection and NDT test procedures or work scopes will be necessary. Training and safety equipment to be provided on-the-job, as necessary.


  • A valid Driver’s License and transportation to our Pompton Lakes, NJ office. Transportation to/from job sites to be provided.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety rules, policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Ability to work as a team under the direction of management to carry out assigned jobs and tasks.
  • Willingness to learn proper equipment use and work procedures.
  • Willingness to follow instructions to complete work in a timely manner as directed or to notify appropriate personnel of alternative planning.

Relevant Training

 The following training or credentials are required:

  • American Petroleum Institute (API) 653 Aboveground Storage Tank Inspector Certification
  • Minimum years of experience as required by API 653 Exam

The following training/credentials are preferred; however, the below will be provided, as necessary:

  • ASNT TC-1A Level I or II – UT, VT, MT, and/or PT
  • Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) Scan and UT Proof-up Training
  • SP001 Adjunct Certification for API 653 Inspectors
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (T.W.I.C.) Card
  • OSHA CFR 1910 & 1926 Safety & Health Training
  • 24 or 40 Hour Hazardous Waste Operations Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Training
  • Confined Space Rescue and Retrieval Training
